Prayer for today
Lord God,
as we reflect on the story of the Good Samaritan,
we ask your forgiveness for all the times we pass by on the other side;
when we look the other way;
when we do not see the person,
or desire to offer help.
May we become more welcoming, more hospitable,
more caring,
more inclusive of others;
for Jesus' sake. Amen.
Thought for this week (based on Luke 10:25-42)
In verses 38 - 42, we have the story of Martha and Mary.
In verse 38
Martha welcomes Jesus.
He who has said he has no place to lay his head
is shown hospitality by Martha,
in a similar way to the Samaritan in the parable off the previous passage,
and in contrast to the village or villages which rejected him
earlier in chapter 9.
Let’s not overlook this wonderful gift which Martha makes to Jesus, or
the gift of hospitality which so many are offering every day.
Romans 12:9-13 says this:
"Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality."
This is what Martha is doing. She is showing hospitality,
she is working hard in serving Jesus,
she is really loving him,
not just speaking about it.
We could all me more like Martha.
