Prayer for today

God of all mercy,
in these times when desperate people arrive on our shores
in small boats;
remind us that you are compassionate God,
who cares for the foreigner, the widow and the orphan,
and who looks to us to do the same,
through Christ our Lord.

Thought for the Day

The kingdom of God is a both/and kingdom.

It is something which is in the here and now,

and it is also something which we hope for in the future.

The kingdom of God is both a heavenly place

 where there is no more tears or pain, or sickness;

 and a place on earth

where the hearts of people are being mended,

and the hopeless are finding meaning and purpose.

When we pray

Thy kingdom come,

we are expressing a longing that things will be different,

(and a hope that one day they will be),

and at the same time

 we are placing ourselves in the position of working toward a better world.
